Owning My Woo-Woo

Sep 24
5 min read

Not long ago I was sitting in a workshop called Working with your Flow, presented by a really lovely woman who works in the health industry. Very scientific, very smart, and very knowledgeable.

She told us it wasn’t her usual topic, but she was excited to tap into the woo. She considers herself a little bit woo, and she loves woo-woo. Then she asked the room, “Who in here is really woo-woo?”

My hand went straight up.

And sitting there with my hand in the air, something started stirring in me. A question I couldn’t put down. Why do we call it woo? Why does the most sacred part of who we are, our soul, get a name that sounds like a giggle?

Why I resisted the word for so long

For a long time I didn’t want to use it. Why should I take on a word that, for so many people, comes with a gentle eye-roll? A polite way of saying “that’s a bit out there”?

Because here’s what I know to be true… We are souls having a human experience. Our soul isn’t a quirky little add-on. It is an integral part of us, maybe even the pure essence of who we are.

And yet for centuries, mainstream society, the media, the church and the patriarchy have told us that anything outside the boxes they built for us needs to be pushed out. The witches were burnt. The medicine women who carried the knowledge of the earth and of healing with nature were cast out. Women who trusted their intuition, their knowing, the divine feminine, the goddess within, were ostracised. In some generations they were even locked away in asylums.

So when a word like woo-woo comes along, it can feel like one more way of saying, “Don’t take that too seriously.”

So what is woo-woo, really?

Here’s how I see it. Woo-woo is simply the name our culture has given to the spiritual side of us: our soul, our intuition and our connection to something greater than ourselves. And spirituality is the act of connecting with that soul.

Nothing strange. Nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s you. The truest part of you.

Why I’m choosing to own it

Lately I’ve been learning to embrace the words that are already out there, rather than fight them. If woo-woo is the word people understand, then I’ll wear it proudly. Because I’m not willing to hide the spiritual side of me anymore.

I’m stepping into owning my role as a modern-day priestess, and a priestess is simply a spiritual guide. I’m here to walk alongside you. To support you, guide you and be there for you as you journey through life and tap into your own spiritual side.

And the more I lean into this, and the more I show up in spaces where women are showing up, the clearer it becomes. My passion, my deep desire, is helping women connect with their intuition, their soul voice, their truth, their spirit. And eventually, if they choose, their spirit team and the guidance of the universe.

Because the universe whispers to us. She really does.

Feathers, rocks and trucks

I love the feather, rock, truck theory. It goes like this.

First, the universe sends you a feather. A soft little whisper. A nudge, a knowing, a sign that flutters past.

Ignore the feathers for too long and she’ll send you a rock. Rocks can be quite hard. They can hurt if they hit you, or trip you up if you step on one. But they’re still not massive.

Keep ignoring the rocks, dear one, and eventually the truck comes. And a truck will put you flat on your face or flat on your back.

So we really don’t want to wait for the truck. The invitation is to listen while it’s still a feather: to the whispers of your soul, the whispers of the universe, and the quiet voice of your intuition.

I feel this matters even more for us as women. So many of us have spent years putting everyone else first and learning to override our own knowing to keep the peace. If that’s you, it’s no wonder the feathers have been easy to miss. Life gets loud. But they haven’t stopped coming.

Practical magic: bringing the woo into everyday life

Here’s what I most want you to know. The woo doesn’t have to be unattainable. It doesn’t have to look like what you think it should look like, or what you think someone else thinks it should look like.

Practical magic: bringing your spirituality into ordinary, everyday moments, in a way that feels natural and true for you.

Meditation, for example, doesn’t have to look a certain way. It needs to look like whatever is best for you. The same goes for how you connect with your intuition, with spirit and with the divine. There’s no one right way.

Ask for a sign

One of the simplest places to start is to ask. Ask the universe, your spirit team or the divine for a sign, and then keep your eyes open.

It might be a feather at your feet. A bird that keeps turning up. An animal that crosses your path on your walk, or something in nature that catches your eye while you’re driving.

For me (no surprises here) it’s dragonflies. When I’m out walking and needing reassurance, or asking for a sign that I’m on the right track, dragonflies appear. Sometimes they fly right in front of my car. And one of the most beautiful parts? Friends and people who know me now message me whenever they see dragonflies.

I get other signs too. Feathers, and lots of visits from the willie wagtails. My partner often sees birds of prey, especially when she needs some reassurance, and she gets visits from the magpies quite a bit. And often, particularly with the birds, I feel it's our loved ones in spirit coming to visit and bring us a message.

Listen

Then comes the listening. And it’s not as hard as you think.

Next time you’re out walking, try this. Ask your question. Let it go. Then gently notice what shows up.

You can absolutely tap into your intuition, the universe, spirit and the divine. You just need to listen.

Your woo is welcome here

I put my hand up in that workshop, and I’m going to keep putting it up. Proudly, joyfully, woo-woo and all.

So I’d love to ask you, lovely one. What’s your sign? Is it a feather, a bird, a butterfly, a song that plays at just the right moment? I’d love to hear.

And if you’re ready to start listening to the whispers of your own soul, and to find out what practical magic looks like for you, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you. Whether it’s 1:1 coaching, a spiritual healing session or a reading, there’s a way in that feels right for you. Explore the ways we can work together.
